POPIA Solutions
Are you POPI Compliant?
Are you still using a “book of truth” at your business entrance to log your visitors? Are you using a pen-and-paper method to gather the government-required Covid-19 information from your clients? If your answer is yes and the only thing you are worried about is sanitising the pen, you need to read up on the POPI Act and act! Because from July 2021 these activities will be in violation of the POPI Act and a company can be fined R10 Million or Officers responsible for compliance can be sentenced to a maximum of 10 years in prison.
The Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2014 (POPI Act or POPIA) is a South African data privacy law which governs when and how enterprises use, store, delete and collect personal information. The act is the equivalent of the European Union’s GDPR. The long and short of the POPI Act is that it exists to protect personal data. We have all heard of data breaches, most popular being the Facebook – Cambridge Analytical data scandal and most recently the Experian data breach in South Africa.
Even if your core business isn’t data-driven like a financial institution or a social media network, you can’t be complacent about the POPI Act.
The POPI Act is applicable whenever you receive any personal or sensitive information at any time, and you are required to follow the minimum requirements for the processing, protection and storage of any and all personal data.
You are required to comply with the POPI Act if you record, store or share any type of personal information in your business, for example:
Clearly, data collection and usage is fast becoming the cornerstone of organisational processes, hence its management gaining value as time progresses. The Experian data breach alone is estimated to have affected 24 million South Africans and around 800,000 businesses.
It, therefore, comes as no surprise that lawmakers conjured up the POPI Act. If you make use of Covid screenings or require personal information for access control there is one simple step to become 100% POPIA compliant and that is to make Instacom your technology partner.
